The many names and titles given to God in the Bible, hold a revelation of who He is; His person and character. Through this we become aware of His purposes toward us. The names and titles serve as a discernment for communication to a better fellowship with Him. For instance, the name Jehovah-Jireh serves more than a label. In this name God reveals Himself to us as our provider.
During Biblical times in most cases, the names given indicated faith and hope or the expectation of the individual that is named. So then, with God, we know He is Almighty, which is translated in the Hebrew Language as El-Shaddai. In times of infirmities, we know He is Jehovah-Rophe, our healer. During the time of perplexity in an uncertain world, the believer shall say the Lord is my Shepherd - Jehovah-Rohi. In darkness, He is my light, Jehovah-'Ori. Even in our idiosyncrasy, we know God is El-Kanna, which is translated in the English as Jealous. However, the jealousy spoken of here is not the same as envy or the strong desire of things that belong to others. Rather the jealousy here, when apply to God, it has the sense of intense love and commitment toward us. For we know He is Jehovah-Go'el, our Redeemer.
For more, explore The Genealogy of Christ: The Lesson Therein. The names we often skip, the kings, the wanderers, the faithful, and the fallen. These names offer far more insight than we are led to believe. Each one carries a lesson, a warning, or a mercy that threads into the redemptive tapestry culminating in Christ. This book unveils those hidden stories, showing how God preserved His promise through human failure, exile, restoration, and grace.
The section you have read, the Names and Titles of God becomes the natural continuation. The genealogy shows how God works through generations. His names show why He works the way He does. The lineage reveals the fragile vessels. The titles reveal the eternal character. Together they form a single testimony.
The genealogy teaches us that God stayed faithful when kings fell, when nations fractured, when hearts wandered. The names of God show us the nature behind that faithfulness.
-
El Shaddai speaks of the God who sustained Abraham when the promise seemed impossible.
-
Jehovah Jireh speaks of the God who provided the ram that kept the covenant alive.
-
Jehovah Rapha speaks of the God who healed the nation after exile.
-
Emmanuel speaks of the God who stepped into the lineage Himself to redeem it.
The book reveals the story. The names reveal the Author.
The genealogy pages tells us how God guarded the line of Christ through centuries of human weakness.
The Names and Titles of God tells us that He did so because His nature is steadfast, holy, merciful, and near.
When a reader moves from one page to the other, they are not shifting topics. They are moving deeper into the same truth. The God who calls Himself by these names is the God who wrote history through these people.
