The 10 commandments serve as a guideline to keep us on the path of that which is right. On the contrary, they do not serve as a means of perfection in us. Rather, it shows the believer, God’s perfection and our need for His holiness by abiding in His covenant. Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. The greatness of the Word of God is its integrity, by which it is without error nor deception. If contradictions arise, it is the reader’s lack of perception. So then, let it be an opportunity to gain a better insight. The passages below are some of that which we avert, for the lack of understanding, but with a willing mind, they shall be made known. The supposedly simplest commandment among Christians, is the most broken commandment. Before the exposition of this topic, let the understanding of the 10 Commandments be known, which is also called the Decalogue, or the Covenant. As a covenant, it serves as a contract, a mutual agreement, as between two or more persons. In this case, this covenant is between God and men, written by God. What are the 10 commandments? The assumption for many is that the commandments and the keeping thereof generates instant righteousness in the individuals who observe and keep them as it is written. If that is the case, at what period does the individual reaches perfection? If perfection is obtained within this covenant between God and man, does God become obsolete because man is now self-righteous and perfect? To this we say, by no means were these laws meant to generate self-righteousness within the individual, for man in himself cannot obtain perfection by the keeping of the Law, by his will, or intellect. (Galatians 2:16) Neither is the believer on a path of becoming a god. So then, the 10 commandments are a reminder of that which is right and that which is wrong. Therefore, as a covenant and a contract between God and man, its intent is to bring together the two parties within the covenant. Therein, the lesser of the covenant will look to the greater of the covenant for the keeping thereof. The lesser of the covenant is the believer and the greater is God. As a parent expects the best from a child by showing them right from wrong, knowing that expectation is the path to do right. However, expectation does not bring about an instant result of perfection. Therefore, the 10 commandments reveal the will of God to the believer. Even as a believer, there are times we will fall short of doing that which we ought not to do. Romans 3:23. However, by knowing the will of God, which is revealed to us through these commandments, His will serve as a guideline to keep us on the path of that which is right. Herein we see the list of the Laws as follows: You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. You must not steal. You must not give false evidence against your neighbor. You must not covet your neighbor’s goods. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor. If the Christian will consider the Laws above in relation to the least, of which is unlikely to be broken; for many Christians, the first commandment, the second, and the sixth are presumably the ones that are likely not to be broken. The third commandment will suffice as well. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. Without further commentary on the 10 laws, the third is the focus of the exposition. In hope to bring out the lesson concerning the topic. For the third is the most broken law in the life of the believer who doesn’t fully understand the purpose of the 10 commandments and the Christian dependency on God. The misconception by and large, for most Christians concerning the third commandment is as follow: The commandment is kept because I do not use the name of the Lord unnecessarily to express shock, excitement or disbelief. I do not swear in vain with the name of the Lord. I do not utter profanities before the Lord’s name I do not randomly use the name of the Lord to express what I feel. Therefore, the misconception is the commandment is kept. This applies to the other commandments as well. Thou shall not commit murder , for an example. Most Christians will declare, I have not murdered, and I will never take the life of another. However, he or she who hates another as a believer, is a murderer. This we read according to (1 John 3:15) Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. That is to say, though hatred burns in the hearts of men walking this earth, but their end is without life, but eternal damnation, the separation from God. For those who minds are framed with murder, or as the Greek renders it, a manslayer. Of which are carnally-minded, and to be carnally-minded is death (Romans 8:6) Shall we then say, certain of the 10 commandments are easier to keep than the others? Likewise, if the four points listed above are observed in like manners in the life of the individual concerning the third commandment; but without the proper understanding which is the right faith, then the believer is likely already breaking the third commandment unknowingly. The name of the Lord is Jehovah Jireh – The Lord who provides , so then, considering He is your provider, but you as a believer are looking elsewhere for your provision; consequently, you are taking the name of your God in vain. Is the believer struggling to do the right thing, in living the Christian life, but is failing daily? Know you not the name of the Lord is Jehovah-Tsidkenu – Your Righteousness? If you are trying to be righteous by your own standards, or Church denominational values, you as a believer are taking the name of your God in vain. For He is Jehovah-Tsidkenu – Your Righteousness . As a believer, are you looking to others for spiritual protection? Then you are taking the name of your God in vain, for He is Jehovah-Rohi – your Shepherd . Consequently, looking elsewhere for spiritual protection is forsaking who God is by taking His name in vain. If the believer is seeking deliverance, but through the laying on hands by other individuals, or through a regimen, consequently, the believer has taken the name of their God in vain, for He is Jehovah -Moshi'ech – your Savior. These and more we perceive with a willing heart that the truth therein may set us free. Freedom from the guilt of doing the wrong things through ignorance, so that we may do that which is right, having received the Truth. Or may the heart of the believer be set free from the guilt of the past, of those things we aren’t proud of, but knowing it is not what we do, it is what God does in us as we believe in Him. For He is Jehovah-Go'el – our Redeemer. Swaggart once wrote concerning this; in the Law, God sets forth His standard of Righteousness, in other words, what man ought to be. This we know, we cannot be what we ought to be without Him. Though we cannot perfectly keep the commandments, but there is One who kept it all. The Lord Jesus Christ, this He did on our behalf. Now, as believers, we place our faith in Him because when we are in Him by faith, we become Law keepers and not Lawbreakers. This we ask once again, are certain of the 10 commandments easier to keep than the others? Neither of them is easier than the others. For if you keep all and break one, you are guilty of breaking all. The Threefold Nature of Man One cannot fully explain or comprehend the relation of the body, soul and spirit without acknowledging God as the key to the comprehension of the subject. Man is a Threefold being , meaning three parts working as one, the body , the soul , and the spirit . The outer of man is the body of man. The middle of man is the soul ; the inner of man is the spirit . (1 Thessalonians 5:23) The body (or the flesh) is the physical outer shell that houses the soul and the spirit. The soul is the existence of who we are. The expression of who we are, through our character. The spirit of man is the intellect, the immortal part of the individual. The soul and the spirit are closely related, however, there is a difference. Dealing with the soul, it is the personal existence of the individual. The soul in relation to the body or (flesh ) The soul, the existence of who we are. It expressed who we are, through our character. The expression of who we are is seen through the soul. This expression of the soul is predicated upon its communion with the spirit , or with the body . Therefore, we walk in the Spirit; meaning, we let the Spirit direct our lives, or we walk after the flesh. Desiring the lust of the human nature. Through communicating with the body, the soul explores the act of self-expression, of who we are. With the eyes , seeing is enacted, causing imagination to the soul. With the nose , we smell, bringing conscience to the soul. With the ears , we hear, producing memory to the soul. With the mouth , we taste, causing the soul to reason. With the hands , or touches, the soul translates affections. These things in themselves are not amiss, but to what cause are they enacted? The soul that desires only the things of the flesh, is carnal. That which is carnal, may be pleasing for a while, but it is temporary. It shall waste away, and so shall the individual whom the soul depends on the attributes of the flesh. The soul in relation to the Spirit On the contrary, the spirit of man is the intellect, and the immortal part of the individual. The intellectual discernment of the spirit does not depend on the physical. This part of man was created by God, as an abode for His presence to dwell with man, for a fellowship and discerning right from wrong. Although the spirit receives impressions of the outward through the body and soul. However, unlike the soul wherewith its senses are the five senses; seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting and feeling. The senses of the spirit are faith, hope, reverence, prayer and worship. Therefore, if the soul of an individual commune with his spirit, the individual discernment is far beyond the physical or the natural. This is what Paul the Apostle refers to as, walking by faith and not by sight. Wherewith, faith becomes the eyes of the soul. Though we see with the natural eyes, but we are not controlled by what we see. Therefore, the individual mood is not altered by sight, or by hearing, neither through the physical interaction with the natural. The benefits of such are innumerable. Where there was once fear, there is assurance. Where anger once control the mood, there is now peace. The soul that once was depressed, shall be grateful. Hatred is replaced with affection. These and more are vital to the existence of who we are, neither are they brought about through a magical enhancement. Until the Spirit of God can dwell with the spirit of man in unity, within man, his spirit abides in darkness. The works of his heart are evil. The results thereof are pride, selfishness, corruption, prevarication, hatred, quarrelsome, greed and Lover of self. The replacement of these things and more, is done through the rejuvenation of the spirit within man. Wherewith, the Spirit of God comes in and dwell with the spirit of man. Where there was once darkness, there shall be light and illumination. However, there arises a problem, the darkened spirit chamber of the natural man, has his “Will ” as a guard at the entry to his spirit, to prevent the entering of the Spirit of God. Case in point, we see the perishing of society around us, however, they rather self-destroy than the acceptance of God in the equation. Young people are disobedient to their parents, but family rather accepts a dysfunctional family by partaking in counseling than teaching their young ones Exodus 20:12 - Honor your father and your mother: that your days may be long . Self ambition without God, but when premature failure arrives, God is blamed. Not until the “Will” of man surrenders to the Spirit of God; illustratively speaking, surrendering is accomplished through the “Sword of the Spirit” wherewith, the “Will” of man is crucified. This is done by the “Word of God” through the acceptance of the Word of God. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 KJV) When the “Will ” surrenders, then the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit can enter and abide with the spirit of man. Now, the individual no longer solely depends on the natural through his flesh, but he can rely on the direction of the Spirit of God. This is the process in which the believer is set apart to be worked on, to make whole (restore) . Theologically speaking, this is sanctification , the believer isn’t perfect, but is being made perfect. There will be times, when the soul of man will resort to the flesh through failure, but his spirit no longer dwells in darkness. Therefore, the Spirit of God in him shall be a guide and a protector to correct, and lead his soul in the guidance of the Holy Spirit along with his spirit. Through FAITH – though we do not see, but we believe. We HOPE – the blessed assurance of God. Our PRAYER - Our communication with God, in every effectual communication, there must be a time to listen, and a time to speak. Therefore, let us learn to listen to God as well as to speak to Him, and WORSHIP – the selfless expression of adoration and praise, the gratification of seeing the goodness of God, through REVERENCE – the respect of the Lord is the path to wisdom. (Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJV) Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole of man. (Not the whole duty of man) as it has been translated. Rather, the whole of man . In other words, if a man keep His commandments or abide in the directive path of the Lord, he is a whole man: Body, soul and spirit. But during the darkest times of his life’s experience, silence became the turning of the pages of the many books. Staying isolated, while trying to make sense of those feelings he was experiencing. At times in the confinement of life’s uncertainty, the mind builds a physical barrier around the individual. As he later wrote in his pictorial autobiographic, A Walking New Man . I thought I had it all and all was figured out about life, until I knew not what I was missing, and when I couldn’t find it. I lost myself. These were hard times, but the only words that penetrated to him were the words of his mother. “I am praying for you.” She wou ld often tell him. The interest in the book did cease, but for one. His Bible became a source for hope and curiosity. In his words, I used my experience of reading as a means to open the pages of the Bible and find something within to change my situation, but I failed miserably to understand the contents therein. Although I read the renowned books and authors, the Shakespeare’s and epic poems as Beowulf, and many intellect writers, such as Robert Frosts and more, but the Bible became a deeper sea of mystery, the more I attempted to use my ability to understand it. But this I know, with desire learning comes easy to those who persist. However, persistence is not always how hard we try, but how more do we want it? For the individual without the Lord, to themselves they are their biggest hindrance. Therein, in order to find ourselves, we must be willing to let go of who we are. Knowing that my ways did not birth in me those things I once wished for, but I now trust, there must be a new way and it is the way of the Lord. That I may walk therein as a walking new man. The idea here is to sit down, as a judge would sit, but sit for a reason, to observe. The believer is not sitting in any place, but the secret place of the most High, this secret place represents the heart of God, His bosom. It is one thing to know a person from a glance, but it is an advantage to understand the heart’s desire of the person, in knowing what is special to them. In so doing, as believers, when we dwelleth, we sit down, let us sit to causatively settle, meaning our sitting is to produce an effect. The desire to understand the heart of God, or that which is dear to Him, and this we know, Christ is the only begotten of the Father. Our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, will determine how we dwell in the presence of God. In the Words of Christ, no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me. Habitation (Psalms 91:9) - an abode, a place of asylum, a home. The phrase, home is where the heart is, goes a long way. No matter how far we travel, or what good of a place we’ve been. Nevertheless, there is always a desire to return home. Consequently, it is our duty to be at home, but at home in God. If there is a rejection of being at home, then it is the evidence of turmoil at home. If God is our habitation, like a good home, there we’ll desire to be. Therein, we talk with Him, and we are delighted to be with Him. When the outside world, has but all disorder and Chaos to throw at us during the day, we quietly, but eagerly look forward to be at home. So is the Christian’s habitation in God. In Him we shall be welcome, as a man or woman is welcome to their home, without any disturbance of the outside, there we find rest and peace in the Lord. In so doing, our habitation becomes our refuge. Refuge – Hope and the shelter of trust. There shall no evil befall thee – Psalms 91:10 The phrase is better translated, though trouble or affliction will come to you, yet there will be no real evil in it toward you. For whatsoever happens to you, God Almighty is aware, and He shall turn the bad into good, for a lesson of a testimony that you may keep trusting in Him. Like an athlete who exercise to build muscles, the ordeal is demanding at times with stress to the body, but not for the destruction of the athlete, rather the betterment of his or her well-being, to be the best. So, the trouble at times, is not for our destruction, but the betterment of our being. The apostle Peter once wrote, saying we are a peculiar people. The word peculiar, in its definition today is to be strange, odd or weird. However, in its meaning of intend when it was written, it gives the reader a picture of a circle. There in the circle is a dot, the dot represents the believer, and the circle is God. If anything reaches the dot within the circle, it must first go through the circle which is God. So then, if anything befalls us, it must first go through the love of God toward us. Though it be uncomfortable for a while in the beginning, but in the end, it will be a blessing and of no harm. If a pregnant woman who is only a human, but at all cost will protect her belly from anything that will be a harm to the baby therein. What more about God who is Almighty? He shall not allow any evil to befall you. If we make the LORD, which is our refuge, even the most High, His habitation; our dwelling. For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. For our decision to serve the Lord, we shall be the head and not the tail. Through fellowship, when we call on the Lord, He will listen and answer; Lord, help me hear and understand when you speak. The greatness of the Word of God is its integrity, by which it is without error nor deception. Our lack of understanding is a path to learn. Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. So then, let it be an opportunity to gain a better insight. The passages below are some of that which we avert, for the lack of understanding, but with a willing mind, they shall be made known. The tree of Knowledge How we perceive knowledge, will determine how knowledge is used for the individual, or the direct impact he or she will have on others. Knowledge is to know, but we can only know when we are presented with that which is to be known. Therefore, human knowledge is limited, for its dependency to a source that must serve as a platform to impart knowledge through experience and observation. Consequently, the origin of Knowledge is the source of all things. The source of all things is the beginning of all things, and this we know; God is the beginning of all things. The lack of understanding is not a validation to dismiss the unknown as a fable. Without reaching out to that one source, though knowledge is obtained at times, yet it cannot perpetuate its true function. For many years, men wondered if there were others like him on the other side of the world. With the increase of knowledge, the world is as one, yet men tried to murder one another. Before the modern Continental means of transportation, men long for the opportunity to reach out to others from across the world. With the introduction of modernized travels by the gain of knowledge, men however, turn to use this means to terrorize others. Though knowledge is present, knowledge is corrupted, for men have forsaken the source of the origin of knowledge which is from God. The realization of good and bad, is the step toward knowledge. For how can the abuser stops the act of abuse and battering without knowing wrong from right, or good from bad? Therefore, society must be presented with the unknown, that the unknown should be made known; which is, in us dwell nothing that is good. Then will the heart cries out, a wretched man I am! Who shall deliver me out of the body of this death? (Romans 7:24) but blessed is the assurance of God; for He has looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth; To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death. A knowledge possessed must be a knowledge use in wisdom. Until it is rightly used, the increase of it will lead to the diminish of society, and the bondage of men. The understanding of men expands, but the moral responsibility among men diminish, and the fine line between right from wrong has faded. As it was with our ancestors of old, out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; The Tree of Life also in the midst of the garden, and The Tree of Knowledge of good and evil . (Genesis 2:9) However, therein the Garden they forfeit, the knowing of God for the knowledge of carnal indulgence. Today, may we turn to the new: Tree of knowledge A fix location does not bind it; its roots are like living waters springing forth into men, purging the unconsciousness of the mind, through the renewal of God’s conscience. Through disobedience to the will of God, our ancestors partake of the tree of knowledge, for a self-gratification. Thereby, sin enters the world, they became aware of what they have lost, and what they could have had. Today, as descendants of the fallen race of Adam, the degradation and the penalty of sin are reverted through obedience to God, by a New Tree of Knowledge. This tree of Knowledge, is the Cross of Christ . Wherewith, He (Christ) bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes we were healed. (1 Peter 2:24) Dead to sin is being freed from sin. To live unto righteousness , which means doing that which is right. Through His stripes we are healed ; that is to say, Christ suffered that we may be healed, body and soul. Then shall we receive the Tree of Life . Knowing this, (He, Christ) having blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His Cross (Colossians 2:14) Gladly will the heart rejoice and, sing a song to the Lord, in the words on The Talleys. His heart was broken, mine was mended He became sin, now I am clean. The cross He carried bore my burden. The nails that held Him set me free. His scars of suffering brought me healing He spilled his blood to fill my soul. His crown of thorns made me royalty His sorrow gave me joy untold Until society can see beyond its pride of self-ambition, and the fulfilling of temporal gratifications; that must be satisfied even at the expense of others. Though the progression of knowledge manifest at times, but until knowledge serves as a discernment between right and wrong; good and evil, the love of the many shall grow cold. However, with the Cross, men shall behold the price that was paid, for the remission of sin. Great was the price, therefore great is the degradation wherewith men must be elevated from. Christ gives Himself as a sacrifice to save all, who will believe. Blessed are those who believe to receive the pardon, but for those who reject, the awareness of the degradation of their guilt is present; and the accountability thereof. The Tree which Christ died thereon, to give us life; this is the tree of knowledge. The acceptance of such is life. She is a Tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retains her. (Proverbs 3:18) For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness; but to us who are saved, it is the power of God.
