Mark 16:18, and the preceding verses and those that follow are categorized as The Great Commission - the act of entrusting, as a charge or duty to an individual or people. The proper authority, given to a person as his or her warrant for exercising certain powers, or the performance of any duty. The duty in this case is the preaching of the Gospel. Before the passage of Mark 16:18 can be understood, it is helpful to understand the preceding verses. The command of Christ to His disciples was, "Go” into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" The verb "go" represent he who is going must first be sent by the Lord. There will be signs which will follow them, to validate they are sent by the Lord. There are six signs listed, beginning with salvation. Verse 16, they shall be saved. The last three signs are found in verse 18. Two of those signs are self-explanatory. • Their health shall not be in danger from what they eat or drink. • They shall heal the sick As stated, these two signs are self-explanatory. However, the first sign is the most misunderstood: They shall take up serpents. There are some who have taken this statement and turn the preaching of the gospel into a circus Show, wherewith, serpents are brought in their churches. Whereas, others use this as a platform for an occultly religion to control others by picking up live poisonous snakes, to demonstrate some sort of special power over their audience, and the snakes. This is the danger when a scripture is misunderstood. The phrase They shall take up serpents, is an old English saying. To take up, means – to take up by removing, take away and destroy, put away, do away with. With that being said, a serpent usually carries a negative connotation in scripture. Therefore, when we read, they shall take up serpents, this is saying; they shall do away with, or remove demon spirits by the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:18 KJV)
